About the Role!


The Senior Director, Search & Evaluation is a key role in supporting the company’s global business development needs and objectives.  The primary responsibility of this role is to lead the Search and Evaluation activities of the company across all stages of R&D, from research platforms and pre-clinical compounds to late-stage clinical assets and inline products. The Senior Director, Search and Evaluation will play an instrumental role in driving the expansion of the company’s pipeline by sourcing and evaluating high-potential assets, licensing opportunities, and collaborations in alignment with the strategic priorities of the company. 


To deliver on this objective, the Senior Director, Search & Evaluation will be responsible for building a broad network through the biotech and biopharmaceutical landscape, to communicate the company’s long-term business objectives and priorities to the external eco-system, and to position the company as the “Partner of Choice”.  In addition to sourcing opportunities, this individual will be responsible to drive diligence activities, and to collaborate with other parts of the organization in the evaluation of potential transactions.

This individual will possess strong scientific expertise in the life sciences and biopharmaceutical industry and significant Search and Evaluation business development experience in the rare disease, pulmonary, infectious therapeutic areas or adjacent therapeutic areas. The ideal candidate will be dynamic, entrepreneurial, and self-motivated and will possess strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.


This position reports to the Senior Vice President, Business Development.



Additional representative responsibilities will include, but not necessarily be limited to, the following: 


  • Lead all search and evaluation efforts for future BD opportunities, inclusive of both scouting activities and evaluation/diligence of novel therapeutic opportunities for both licensing and M&A, while supporting transactional activities
  • Responsible for identifying and evaluating of all external in-licensing opportunities including early research projects, new modality platforms, early and late clinical stage candidates and Life Cycle Management opportunities
  • Demonstrate leadership and scientific rigor while collaborating closely key stakeholders and cross-functional teams including Commercial, R&D and external partners to ensure effective communication, efficient decision-making and support completion of transactions with BD teams in a timely manner
  • Conduct initial assessment of select inbound opportunities; lead scientific and clinical due diligence with cross functional teams.
  • Perform proactive external outreach and evaluation to identify and qualify partnering or acquisition opportunities, collaborations and technical platform capabilities that can enhance the scientific credibility and portfolio that fit with Insmed interests and priorities
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver assessments of technical/commercial risks and team recommendations of external opportunities and governance endorsement, integrating high-level stakeholder input and senior management review and endorsement
  • Represents the Business Development strategy at partnering meetings to identify and triage external assets and opportunities
  • Attends medical and investor conferences to establish partnerships/relationships with other BD counterparts to seek licensing and potential BD opportunities


About you!


  • MD or PhD in a related scientific field (e.g. biology, chemistry, pharmacology) is required, MBA is a plus
  • At least 15 years combined experience within the biopharmaceutical industry or related biotech/healthcare practice (e.g., consulting, investment banking, venture capital) in a related scientific field (e.g. biology, chemistry, pharmacology), with a minimum of 5 years of relevant business development experience in S&E function is required
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in at least one major area of drug development, such as Discovery, Preclinical Development, Clinical Development, or Regulatory Affairs is required
  • Demonstrates a deep understanding of the drug discovery, development, and regulatory processes, with a deep understanding of the business strategy
  • Project management and leadership skills to lead cross-functional teams in evaluating partnering opportunities and producing high quality assessments of scientific and therapeutic hypotheses, as well as preclinical and clinical data
  • Ability to establish internal and external business relationships across boundaries; highly engaging and comfortable interacting with executive teams
  • Has an entrepreneurial attitude and delivery focus with the ability to seamlessly toggle between transactional and strategical business elements
  • Demonstrates negotiation and influencing skills with diverse groups of stakeholders to creatively solve problems with internal and external stakeholders
  • Deep scientific curiosity and commitment to advancing therapeutic innovation that provides better options for patients
  • Ability to drive well-informed, fact-based decision making to drive projects and deliver timely results
  • Posses a high degree of motivation, bringing an energetic approach to all business interactions and project work

Travel Requirements:

  • Up to 40% travel, both domestic and/or international
